Minnesota Department of Health Briefing

This afternoon, officials from the Minnesota Department of Health conducted a press briefing with reporters to update the public on the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Director Kris Ehresmann, Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Prevention, and Control Division

  • Director Ehresmann reported 936 new cases of COVID-19. This brings the state’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 97,638.
  • The median age for a case of COVID-19 is 35-years-old.
  • There were seven new deaths due to COVID-19. This brings the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Minnesota to 2,015.
  • A total of 7,546 patients have been hospitalized for COVID-19 thus far in the pandemic with 2,111 of those treated in the ICU.
  • There were 53 new admissions to the hospitals.
  • There were 16 new admissions to the ICU.
  • 22,162 COVID-19 tests were reported to the state yesterday.
  • Over the weekend, the state reached and passed two million COVID-19 tests conducted since the beginning of the pandemic.
  • The seven-day COVID-19 average test positivity rate is 5.4%. It was at 4.4% a week prior. The state has been above the caution threshold of 5% for two days.
  • Director Ehresmann said the state is seeing more cases associated with workplace settings and social gatherings.
  • 89 clusters (cases of three or more) have been associated with food processing plants, grocery stores, and bakeries.
  • 40 clusters have been associated with meat processing plants.
  • 182 clusters have been associated with manufacturing plants
  • 236 clusters have been associated with general businesses of all types.
  • 77 bars and restaurants have been investigated. 47 establishments have had enough cases to be counted as an outbreak. 1,416 unique cases can be traced to bars and restaurants.
  • 37 outbreaks have been associated with weddings. 11 have been associated with funerals. 22 have been associated with gyms.
  • She reiterated the importance for everyone in the state to do their part to slow the spread of the virus – keep six feet of distance, wear a mask, wash hands, and stay home when sick.
