Walz Expected to Call Special Session for Monday

Tomorrow, Governor Tim Walz is expected to issue a proclamation calling for another special session of the legislature for Monday, July 13.

When the legislature convenes for the second special session of the year, the House and Senate will vote on whether to allow the governor’s peacetime emergency powers to continue, which are set to expire on Monday. Every time the governor seeks to extend his emergency powers by 30 days, he is required to call the legislature back into special session.

It is expected that the Republican-controlled Senate will vote to end the powers, while the DFL-controlled House will allow them to continue. Both chambers would need to vote to end the powers for them to cease.

As it relates to an agenda for the second special legislative session of 2020, Governor Walz said he wants to see police reform and accountability measures, a bonding bill, COVID-19 response resources, and rebuilding proposals for areas of Minneapolis and St. Paul impacted by civil unrest.
