Commissioner Jan Malcolm

• Commissioner Malcolm said the state’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases is up 365 since yesterday. The new total number of laboratory-confirmed cases 4,181. The increase is due to a higher number of intensive testing due to outbreaks.
• There were an additional 15 deaths due to COVID-19 – brining the state total to 301. 10 of those deaths were associated with residents in long-term care facilities.
• Currently, 314 patients are hospitalized with 120 of those in the ICU.
• According to the department, one week ago 927 people were tested in one day. As of yesterday, there were 2,412 tests.
• When asked whether the state will reach the ability for 5,000 tests a day by Monday to reopen the next layer of the economy, Commissioner Malcolm responded that testing is one factor the governor will be considering. It’s not a singular factor in his decision.
• When asked what the specific number of tests will be by Monday, the department responded that they couldn’t provide a specific number, but that the testing numbers will be higher than it is today.

House Convenes for Floor Session

Today, the House met for a floor session. While no bills were taken up, a resolution was offered by Rep. Eric Lucero (R-Dayton) to end Governor Walz’s peacetime emergency executive order. With 90 votes needed to suspend the rules for the House to take up the resolution, the motion failed 59-73.

Both the House and Senate will reconvene their respective floor sessions at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 30.
