Candidate Death in Minnesota Second Congressional District Moves Race to February

Secretary of State Steve Simon announced today that the election for Minnesota’s Second Congressional District has moved from November 3, 2020, to February 9, 2021, due to the death of Adam Weeks. Weeks was the Legal Marijuana Now Party nominee for Minnesota Second Congressional District.

Minnesota law states that when a major party nominee passes away within 79 days of an election, a special election will be held for that office on the second Tuesday of February of the following year. This means that the race for Minnesota’s Second Congressional District, which encompasses suburban and rural communities south of Minneapolis and St. Paul, will occur on Tuesday, February 9, 2021.

The Legal Marijuana Now Party achieved major party status in Minnesota in 2018 when the party’s nominee for state auditor received 5.28% of the vote. Major party status is granted to political parties if their nominee receives at least 5% of the vote in a statewide election.

Currently, Minnesota’s Second Congressional District seat is held by Congresswoman Angie Craig (D), who was first elected in 2018. She is facing Republican nominee Tyler Kistner as she seeks a second term. The Legal Marijuana Now Party will have the opportunity to nominate a new candidate for the race.
