Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Local 34: A Century of Excellence

Founded in 1913, Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Local 34 has been a cornerstone of the labor movement for over a century. Through times of prosperity and hardship, from economic downturns to periods of national conflict, our Union has not only endured but has thrived. We owe this legacy to the dedication of countless members who have contributed to our growth and success, and we look forward to continuing this tradition for generations to come.

Our commitment to excellence has solidified Local 34's position in Minnesota's Building & Construction Trades Council. We work together to improve the lives of our members and to uphold the high standards of our trade- a tradition of service and skill that elevates both the union and the industries we serve.

What we do

Our members specialize in installing a wide range of insulation materials for the thermal protection of both hot and cold mechanical systems. Our work is essential in numerous settings such as, but not limited to:

  • Apartments and commercial buildings
  • Industrial plants and chemical plants
  • Nuclear and fossil fuel power plants
  • Military bases and airports
  • Government and correctional facilities
  • Schools and universities
  • Retail complexes and underground piping systems

Our scope of work is vast, and our members are trained across all areas of insulation application. We also provide certified expertise in fire protection, soundproofing, and the installations of various protective coatings on mechanical systems, meeting the complex demands of modern building infrastructure.

Training and safety

Our training program includes the latest certifications, including up-to-date OSHA and confined space training, to ensure a safe work environment for everyone involved- our members, our contractors, our customers and the public. By constantly upgrading our techniques and certifications, we stay competitive and equipped to tackle the ever-evolving challenges of the marketplace.

Through skill, safety and solidarity, Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers Local 34 is building a stronger future for our members and our communities.

The St. Paul Park refinery has operated safely for many decades with the help of skilled union trades workers who live and work in the area. But the picture changed in 2019 when Marathon Petroleum Corporation took over the facility and began replacing local workers with lower-wage, out-of-state workforce.

Marathon's decision to abandon local workers and undercut area wage and benefit standards could cost St. Paul Park and surrounding communities millions of dollars in lost wages and economic activity. Worse, the replacement of personnel with decades of experience could end up exposing workers and community members to avoidable hazards.

Marathon currently owns and supplies the Speedway chain of gas stations, and will continue to provide gasoline Speedway with gasoline under a 15- year fuel supply agreement even after the proposed sale of the chain to the owners of 7-11. Please support businesses that support local workers, and let Marathon know that it's time to abandon their failed labor strategy.

We are appealing only to the public. We are not asking any individual to cease performing any services, or to refuse to pick-up, transport, or deliver any goods.

Keeping both of our refineries filled with our members keeps both the commercial and the industrial workers happy.

This affects us all.
